Shh!!!

Reblogged from: Jade C. Jamison

One thing I will say about the publishing community of indie authors—we know how to network.  Yesterday, more drama, and it spread like wildfire.  We’d been hearing the buzz about Kobo/ WH Smith pulling down “questionable” content, but then they announced that they were pulling down everything indie without regard to content.  It was a no-holds-barred frenzy of figuratively pulling books off shelves.  Then articles appeared, accusing not only Kobo but Barnes and Noble and Amazon as well of the same sort of behavior.  Shortly thereafter, Facebook was going crazy with not whispers but shouts, crying censorship.  Readers were angry with the rumors that all their books could be deleted off their Kindles with no warning (because they’re paying for the “license,” not the “book”), and authors were angry because—bottom line—Amazon earns most of us more money than all the other outlets combined.  We reach a wider audience with Amazon, frankly, and to even dream that we can no longer use the seller as an outlet is upsetting, to say the least.

While the jury is still out—because neither I nor any other author or reader have seen anything in print from Amazon confirming or denying this rumor—I am a little hopeful, because not one but two readers contacted me to tell me they had spoken personally with someone at Amazon over the phone and were assured that these were rumors and nothing more.  One woman who posted on one of my discussions about the matter said they told her they would have someone in PR release a statement to quell the rumors on Facebook.

As you know by now, that statement has not yet been released…and, until it is, I and my fellow indie authors will wait, hopeful but nervous.

In the meantime, I have done all I can.  I have signed the petition at change.org (if you want to sign or see it, click the link.  When I signed it yesterday, it had fewer than 300 signatures and now, as I post this article early Tuesday morning, it has over 10,000!).  I also urged others to sign.  Deeper than crushing our livelihood is the threat of censorship, something I think most of us can agree is a bad thing.  When others can start to choose what you can and cannot read, then they begin to worry about all the other areas of others’ lives they aren’t happy with.  We live in a free country, folks, which means we have the liberty to choose what we personally like, and that also means that we might not always like what someone else is doing.  Get over it! Read more...

As you can see, yesterday was a firestorm of epic proportions of which no one was immune. To date, all of my books, both under my given and pen name, have been pulled from Amazon UK's shelves, along with every other author I share space with. I don't know when they will be available for purchase again, but this morning I was prompted to re-sign a terms of conditions agreement, so I am hopeful that they will be soon.

On a brighter note, all of my work is still available (and hopefully will continue to be) on ALL of the other platforms (Amazon US, Kobo, B&N, Smashwords, and Apple iTunes). For those authors who have had all of their work pulled, hang in there!

WELCOME TO THE HOT PARANORMAL NIGHTS BLOG HOP!
I want to extend a big THANK YOU to the lovely authors hosting this wonderful hop, Tricia Schneider and Kallysten.

Today I am sharing an excerpt from my novel "Addicted to Magic"with all of you. It is a young adult novel dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a teenage witch. Not only does it contain elements of magic, but it is laugh out loud funny, packed with drama, and topped with a nice helping of Oh, my God! He's so HOT! romance. Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter (It's INTERNATIONAL!) at the end for a shot at your very own copy of "Addicted to Magic" and definitely do make sure to follow on to the next awesome blog! Good luck and Happy Reading!!

ADDICTED TO MAGIC EXCERPT:

I pondered what to do for some time, trying to figure out how to get the information I would need to put a stopper in my mother’s path toward destruction, before finally noticing Amber’s attentions.
“What are you doing?” I asked, looking down at the fishnet stockings, short pleated black skirt and low-cut top.
“Helping you get ready,” she said, shoving another bobby pin into my hair. “There,” she announced, hopping down from the bed. “I now pronounce you gorgeous. No need to thank me, I can’t take all the credit. My model wasn’t completely unfortunate.”
“Gee, thanks.” I went to the mirror, admiring her handiwork. My hair was twisted up, a few golden brown strands hanging down in gentle waves. My make-up was fresh, not overly done. Except for the eyes, which were lined in coal, the lids mat black. It made my green eyes pop. And my clothes were, well, my clothes, but I had never thought to put them together that way before.
I looked like some sort of Goth princess.
“What is all this for?” I asked suspiciously, smoothing the skirt.
Jumping up and down and clapping her hands, Amber grinned widely. “Tonight we are going to party like it’s 1999, biotch!”

***
“Why am I here?” I asked myself aloud as I followed Amber up the walkway toward what could only be described as a mansion. Instantly, I felt smaller. “Why do I let you talk me into these things?”
“Because you’re a genius,” she said, weaving her way through a group of older boys.
I looked around, realizing that I didn’t recognize anyone there. I followed closely on Amber’s heels, feeling self-conscience and out of place, as she led the way into the kitchen.
“You tell me my mother is about to become road kill and suddenly I find myself at some party.”  I shook my head at the insanity of it all.
“I said it once and I’ll say it again, it’s not happening tonight. Why waste a perfectly good party sitting around the house worrying when you can be here, having a good time.”
A fairly attractive boy dressed in a toga stood behind the counter making drinks for everyone. Amber stepped up, giving him a flirty smile as she took a cup. She passed me what appeared to be fruit punch and accepted another for herself.
I sipped tentatively at my drink as we made our way around the crowded home. There were people everywhere, clogging the hallways and rooms at every turn. And the noise, it was deafening.
We staked out a place along a wall in the den where a group of people stood watching as a band set up their equipment in the corner. I leaned into Amber and shouted over the pulsing music.
“How much longer are we staying?”
“What!”
“How much longer?” I said louder.
She nodded. “Yeah, he is strong!”
I scrunched my nose at her obvious misunderstanding. Following her gaze, I caught sight of what she was talking about.
There was a wet bar set up at the back of the room where a guy was using some girl as a weight bar, doing push-ups while another guy fed him Jell-O shots. I shook my head. This was so not my scene. I literally itched to get out of there.
Amber was in her element. Guys aplenty as she would have called it. She eyed them like a kid in a candy shop, eager to sample the goods.
“If she keeps staring like that she’s going to give herself a toothache.”
I turned to find a guy with golden blond hair and the prettiest set of brown eyes I had ever seen staring down at me. He smiled warmly.
“Um, what?” I asked lamely.
“You’re friend.” He tipped his head at Amber. “She’s looking at every guy in here like they’re her personal lollipop.”
I laughed. “Yes, she is. Good thing men aren’t food, or she’d be obese.”
He laughed. “I’m Trent. And you are…”
“Jessica.”
“Jessica,” he said, trying it out. “Nice name. Common, but pretty, like you.”
I raised a brow at him, then burst out laughing. “Oh man, that has got to be the worst pick-up line I have ever heard. Does that really work for you?”
He made a face, sucking in a hesitant breath through his teeth. “Apparently not. This is my first time.”
“Virgin?” I shot back. I was hardly bashful, and as I quickly found out, neither was he.
“Hardly,” he grinned. “I meant that was my first time using that line. My buddy insisted that I use it. It was a bet. I lost.” He took a long drink from his cup. “So what college you go to?”
I frowned. “College?”
“Yeah, you at state, or community?”
“Um, neither,” I said, suddenly realizing exactly why I hadn’t been able to recognize anyone. This was a college party.
He nodded as if he understood perfectly.

    Sizzling Summer Blog Hop

The Romance Troupe is hosting its first annual
    Sizzling Summer Blog Hop!
    July 4th - July 7th

Please join over 40 authors and bloggers as we celebrate summer with some fabulous romantic tales.
Each blog will feature a SIZZLING excerpt from one of the author's own books or from one of their favorite reads.

Here is mine from That First Kiss by J.C. Valentine!

    THAT FIRST KISS
    (NIGHT CALLS SERIES, book 2)

BLURB: Mercurial and charming, Tate Larson is a rising author and playboy who has a different woman on his arm every night of the week. Focused on his work, Tate has no plans to settle down any time soon. That is until he meets his pretty new assistant, Piper Donovan.

Desperate to escape the promise of backwater living, Piper ditched her Alabama hometown and never looked back. That was almost two years ago. Now that she is out of a job and her bank account is running on fumes, she’s desperate to find a job, fast. She finds the break she is searching for when she lands a position at Bookish Temptations. A little dancing and a lot of drinks with the girls seem the perfect way to celebrate. After a brief but explosive encounter with a man she was never supposed to see again turns out to be the same man she will be bending over backwards to please, her every instinct tells her to run. But when running means leaving the life she has struggled so hard to create, Piper decides her only option is to continue working for the devastatingly sexy Tate Larson...even if it kills her.

Unable to deny their growing attraction, they struggle to keep their distance in a relationship that requires anything but.

    EXCERPT:
“I’ll put on a pot of coffee.”
“Nah, don’t worry about it.” Tate waved her off.
“What do you mean, don’t worry about it?” Piper stood there holding the empty pot in one hand and a bag of fresh grounds in the other. “Half an hour ago you were yelling at me because you ran out. Now you don’t want any?”
“First of all,” Tate said, leaning inside the refrigerator. Piper tried and failed not to appreciate the view. “I didn’t yell. Second, I reserve the right to change my mind.” He selected the jug of orange juice and began pouring a glass.
“To be clear, you were yelling,” Piper informed him. She just couldn’t resist poking the beast.
Tate stepped closer, setting his glass on the counter. Unsure what he was up to, Piper held her ground. She nearly sighed when he lifted his hand to brush the back of his knuckles across her cheek. “Did I scare you?”
For a moment, Piper got lost in the warmth of his eyes. At his touch, her body flamed, acutely aware of his potent masculinity. It was the second time that day he had managed to tilt her world on its axis. “I should get home. It’s late.” She purposely ignored his question and stepped back, putting much needed distance between them. Her shaking legs barely made it to the front door and she was just slipping her purse over her shoulder when Tate’s smooth voice stopped her.
                “You didn’t answer my question.”
                “What question was that?”
He spun her around and her eyes widened as he backed her up against the door. He leaned forward and, bracing his hands on either side of her head, hovered over her. “Did I scare you?” His face was so close; she felt the whisper of his lips against hers as he spoke.
“You don’t scare me,” she said breathlessly. Piper was shocked at the kind of responses this man could evoke from her, how readily her body responded to him. She shouldn’t have been responding to him at all. He made her so angry, the only thing she should be feeling for him was hatred and resentment, but every time he looked at her a certain way or spoke her name in a certain tone, her traitorous body melted for him. It was humiliating.
“You look scared,” he observed, the corners of his mouth twisting slightly.
“What are you doing?” Piper flattened herself against the door as Tate tilted his head toward her.
                “Thinking,” he said, distracted.
“About what?” Her heart pounded and she was finding it harder to breathe.
His lips whispered across hers. “Kissing you.” He dragged his lips down the slope of her jaw to her neck. “Tasting you.” When he reached the curve of her shoulder his hand dipped between her legs and cupped her throbbing mound. “Fucking you,” he whispered, placing a succulent kiss to her heated flesh.
