ADDICTED TO MAGIC EXCERPT:

I pondered what to do for some time, trying to figure out how to get the information I would need to put a stopper in my mother’s path toward destruction, before finally noticing Amber’s attentions.
“What are you doing?” I asked, looking down at the fishnet stockings, short pleated black skirt and low-cut top.
“Helping you get ready,” she said, shoving another bobby pin into my hair. “There,” she announced, hopping down from the bed. “I now pronounce you gorgeous. No need to thank me, I can’t take all the credit. My model wasn’t completely unfortunate.”
“Gee, thanks.” I went to the mirror, admiring her handiwork. My hair was twisted up, a few golden brown strands hanging down in gentle waves. My make-up was fresh, not overly done. Except for the eyes, which were lined in coal, the lids mat black. It made my green eyes pop. And my clothes were, well, my clothes, but I had never thought to put them together that way before.
I looked like some sort of Goth princess.
“What is all this for?” I asked suspiciously, smoothing the skirt.
Jumping up and down and clapping her hands, Amber grinned widely. “Tonight we are going to party like it’s 1999, biotch!”

***
“Why am I here?” I asked myself aloud as I followed Amber up the walkway toward what could only be described as a mansion. Instantly, I felt smaller. “Why do I let you talk me into these things?”
“Because you’re a genius,” she said, weaving her way through a group of older boys.
I looked around, realizing that I didn’t recognize anyone there. I followed closely on Amber’s heels, feeling self-conscience and out of place, as she led the way into the kitchen.
“You tell me my mother is about to become road kill and suddenly I find myself at some party.”  I shook my head at the insanity of it all.
“I said it once and I’ll say it again, it’s not happening tonight. Why waste a perfectly good party sitting around the house worrying when you can be here, having a good time.”
A fairly attractive boy dressed in a toga stood behind the counter making drinks for everyone. Amber stepped up, giving him a flirty smile as she took a cup. She passed me what appeared to be fruit punch and accepted another for herself.
I sipped tentatively at my drink as we made our way around the crowded home. There were people everywhere, clogging the hallways and rooms at every turn. And the noise, it was deafening.
We staked out a place along a wall in the den where a group of people stood watching as a band set up their equipment in the corner. I leaned into Amber and shouted over the pulsing music.
“How much longer are we staying?”
“What!”
“How much longer?” I said louder.
She nodded. “Yeah, he is strong!”
I scrunched my nose at her obvious misunderstanding. Following her gaze, I caught sight of what she was talking about.
There was a wet bar set up at the back of the room where a guy was using some girl as a weight bar, doing push-ups while another guy fed him Jell-O shots. I shook my head. This was so not my scene. I literally itched to get out of there.
Amber was in her element. Guys aplenty as she would have called it. She eyed them like a kid in a candy shop, eager to sample the goods.
“If she keeps staring like that she’s going to give herself a toothache.”
I turned to find a guy with golden blond hair and the prettiest set of brown eyes I had ever seen staring down at me. He smiled warmly.
“Um, what?” I asked lamely.
“You’re friend.” He tipped his head at Amber. “She’s looking at every guy in here like they’re her personal lollipop.”
I laughed. “Yes, she is. Good thing men aren’t food, or she’d be obese.”
He laughed. “I’m Trent. And you are…”
“Jessica.”
“Jessica,” he said, trying it out. “Nice name. Common, but pretty, like you.”
I raised a brow at him, then burst out laughing. “Oh man, that has got to be the worst pick-up line I have ever heard. Does that really work for you?”
He made a face, sucking in a hesitant breath through his teeth. “Apparently not. This is my first time.”
“Virgin?” I shot back. I was hardly bashful, and as I quickly found out, neither was he.
“Hardly,” he grinned. “I meant that was my first time using that line. My buddy insisted that I use it. It was a bet. I lost.” He took a long drink from his cup. “So what college you go to?”
I frowned. “College?”
“Yeah, you at state, or community?”
“Um, neither,” I said, suddenly realizing exactly why I hadn’t been able to recognize anyone. This was a college party.
He nodded as if he understood perfectly.

Review of The Ghost in My Bedroom by Heather Jones

Lucy Warner has managed to fall in love with her roommate – who has been dead for about 25 years. Since he’s been haunting her bedroom from the time when she was a baby, they have grown to be very good friends; a secret that no one else knows about, not even her best friend Ling. But Lucy wonders if it is possible to be more than just friends, as she realizes Ryan is the perfect guy for her.

It is the summer after high school graduation. Lucy finds herself newly single, and slightly bitter after a bad breakup. When Ling sets her up on a date with Jon, she plays along to try and forget about her ghost and get on in life with a real living guy. But when she finds out Jon can see ghosts too, keeping her secret gets a little complicated.

I don't see the point in rehashing the plot, so I'll just get to the heart of my review.

I picked this book up because I liked the title and the description seemed like something I would really be interested in since I am a big fan of YA paranormal romances. However, once I began reading, I experienced mixed emotions. I'll begin with the good stuff...

    The Good Stuff-
Lucy is an average girl who just so happens to share her bedroom with a ghost. A good-looking, moody, teenage ghost who's been dead somewhere around 20 years if I recall correctly. While Lucy herself isn't entirely likeable, I did like her prospective boyfriend, Jon. He was shy and screamed of innocence, but when you scratched the surface, he was just your average hormonal teenage boy. A diamond in the ruff, if you will. The descriptions of Lucy's experience were also good. It painted a clear picture of what she was feeling when she encountered Ryan, so no problems there. Lucy's knack for sewing was also an interesting detail, and I often wondered if the author had some personal experience in a lot of what Lucy did in her day to day activities, because the knowledge involved was very thorough. Overall, it was an imaginative story with a lot of promise.

    The Not So Good Stuff-
From the opening chapter I was faced with extreme run-on sentences, frequent grammatical errors, and unrealistic dialogue. Frankly, I was pretty close to calling it quits by the end of chapter one. I didn't want to give up, though, because the premise really captured me and I wanted to give it the old college try before I cast it aside. The story picked up a bit and, like I said before, the descriptions were well-done. I can't say the convos improved much, nor did I connect with any of Lucy's friends, but I did feel a little bad for the way she constantly ditched Ryan. They were BFFs since she was a baby, and yet she left him alone constantly. I call that rude and inconsiderate. Even if he is dead.

I also took issue with Ryan's sudden mood changes. At one point, Lucy made him upset with something incredibly minor, and he flipped out unnecessarily and called her a b**ch. I don't mind books with language, but it was so inconsistent with what I had read up to that point that it was a shock. This moment also marked a gradual increase in strong language.

Jon was a nice addition, but as we try to get to know him along with Lucy, the author sprinkled a few disturbing and, imo misplaced, encounters with Lucy's ex-boyfriend. I think this was a simple means to add drama and work an ending, but to me, it actually took away from the story. Her ex is detestable and is constantly showing up when she is all alone. His increasing display of violent tendencies and her constant disregard for her safety made me want to scream. Without giving anything away, I could see how this was going to end a mile away.

The ending was also something of a letdown. While not entirely bad, it ended up being a switching of roles. A choice had to be made, and the author did just that. I can't say how I would have liked it to go, but either way, I just wasn't feeling it.

All in all, I give Ms. Jones a thumbs up for creating a story. I know what hard work it can be and how difficult it is to get from A to B. This wasn't a bad story. Not by a long shot. I think a lot of people will really enjoy it, and I did like some of it (I finished it, didn't I?). I feel that the biggest issue with this book is not so much the storyline, but the editing(run-ons, drug instead of dragged, than instead of then and vice vera, and redundancy). If the book was cleaned up, it would make it run smoother and I allow the reader to focus more on the characters and less on the story's problems.

I'm giving this 3.5 stars and I'll say it's worth the read.

Weekend Writing Warriors 8 Sentences~Crossfire (Addicted, book 2) by Brandi Salazar

About the scene: This takes place after Jessica's BFF Amber suffers a hormonal breakdown and she is giving her her own idea of a special gift to cheer her up.

“I need you to get a carton of ice cream—”

“Mint chocolate chip!” Amber interrupted, sitting up straighter.

“Mint chocolate chip,” I repeated. “A bag of Fritos to replace the old one.” I thumbed behind me and Carmen’s eyes followed the movement, narrowing with annoyance when he spotted Amber happily munching away at his stash. “And a box of Tampax, size super, cotton, not that synthetic crap.”

Carmen froze and his attention snapped back to me, his eyes wide and fearful. I grinned, acting oblivious to his discomfort. “Got all that?” I asked when he made no move to blink or respond or even breathe.

He swallowed audibly and blinked several times as he struggled to regain his composure. “Ye—” He choked on the word a little and cleared his throat to try again. “Yeah, I got it,” he said, his voice strained.

“’Kay, thanks!” I gently nudged him out the door and closed it behind him.

“You are one wicked broad,” Amber said, her face aglow with pleasure.

“Good present?” I asked, skipping back to the bed.

    “The best.”
