What I'm Thankful For

As the holiday approaches, I see posts everywhere about what people are thankful for, and it got me thinking. What am I thankful for? There are so many things, but today I will start with sharing one.

I am thankful that I have the opportunity to be an author.

I know this probably doesn't sound like much, but to me it really is. I've been writing for years, but I've never really considered myself to be a writer, author, or teller of lies, what have you ;) To be honest, I never really thought I was that good at it, and I certainly never thought I would be successful.

That all changed when I wrote a book entitled That First Kiss and it suddenly took off. Now people know my name, they come to tell me that they enjoyed my work. And I'm like...
Okay, maybe it's not love, but a girl can dream.

It's such a gift to hear those words. They're so simple, but they mean so much to an author. You just don't know. It's affirmation that I am at least somewhat good at what I do, and it gives me incentive to keep doing it.

I am also thankful that this is a paying gig. It didn't used to be, and while some days are better than others, I am thrilled to bits that I can pay my bills and clothe my children and have a little wiggle room to do whatever the hell pleases me from time to time. Being an author has meant seriously changes in my family's life, and all for the better. I really am thankful for that, and I am thankful for all of you!

An author's rant

Reblogged from :
Click to visit the original post That’s it I quit. As authors we say this quite often.  Not because of the writing aspect, not even because of the editing issues, heck we even can get through the rejection letters like pros. Some find them a cheap alternative to wallpaper. While others find it a mark of a real author to be rejected. Whatever your poison it’s not the writing that makes us want to quit.

I think every author out there can relate to this!! My favorite line:  "Readers please do me a favor, if you read a book and enjoy it, tell at least two people, because your opinion is the best marketing in the world."

Like any little girl, I grew up with the dream of finding my prince charming and being swept off my feet to live in a castle with my 2.3 children and live happily ever after. Like any woman who shared that dream, I know now that while those fairy tales come true for some, most women have to wade through a few toads to find their happily ever after.

When I started reading romances I went into it for the guaranteed HEA. When I started writing romances, I knew I would be the one to provide it, but not without a little yelling, screaming and moaning first ;)

You can find Stranded and That First Kiss on Amazon, B&N and Kobo, but since you're here for a little fun...keep reading!

Each blogger has been asked to add a little something extra to make this hop memorable and exciting, so I have decided to offer up an ebook copy of  Stranded and That First Kiss by J.C. Valentine to (2) winners!

Excerpt

I knew Eric would have wanted me to move on.
But he would have hated to know I moved on with my grief counselor.
I didn’t know the first thing about grief, or dealing with it, or how to control the breakdown I went through every night when I went back to the apartment we shared together.
I was broken.
I dropped my head back, closing my eyes as Jon’s teeth slid down the flesh of my neck. His tongue visited my earlobe and made my toes curl.
And he made me forget. There were pluses to banging the grief counselor, and also minuses, his own emotional baggage—his dead wife.
I wondered why such a man needed to bang in cars before grief meetings. But as I yanked him by his lush head of dark hair down to my tits I knew why. He was a mess just like me.
“What time is it?” he asked his breath heavy as he worked his gorgeous body back and forth in the perfect rhythm slamming into me over and over again.
I pressed my hand against his mouth making him stop talking. “I’m about to cum and you’re worried about the time?”
He went for my mouth, trying his best to plant a kiss on my lips. I shook my head; my lips were reserved for Eric and only Eric. He drew back like a snake bit him, and slapped on the expression of a man with a bruised ego.
“Not a lot of men want to fuck a girl with issues,” he said.
I stared into his eyes, flecks of gold decorated the center, and a lush set of dark eyelashes covered them. “You’re fucking me.” I reminded him straining under the weight of his muscular body, twirling my hips around his manhood to get him to forget the lecture he wanted to hand over.
He pressed his forehead into my chest, doing his best to hold onto the control. “Because I get you.”
I squeezed his ass refusing to let him stop me. “You don’t get me. You love fucking me. You miss your wife, I miss my husband and you’re the best sex I have had since he died.”
And that was all she wrote. Jon groaned pressing his face against mine, he had beat me to the finish line. I liked the sound of his voice against my ear as he exploded inside me.
And now it was my turn to make it there, around and around I went begging my body to let go, to give in and let me remember what it felt like to release, but it didn’t happen.
I closed my eyes throwing my head back against the leather of his backseat, hot, and defeated.
“It’s past six,” Jonathan said snapping off the condom. “Shit, we’re late.”
I rolled my eyes watching him tie up the end of the rubber. He found his shirt and slipped it on using his elbow to wipe away the moisture on his window.
I was sure Eric never expected that I would be naked in the back of an old four door wondering why I couldn’t orgasm. He always knew how to get me off;
He was the epitome of what making love was all about. Anymore I seemed to be chasing the ghost of what once was.

Review~ Find You in the Dark by A. Meredith Walters

Maggie Young had the market on normal. Normal friends, normal parents, normal grades...normal life.

Until him.

Clayton Reed was running from his past and an army of personal demons that threatened to take him down. He never thought he had a chance at happiness.

Until her.

Maggie thought their love could overcome anything. Clay thought she was all he needed to fix his messy life.

That together, they could face the world.

But the darkness is always waiting.

Sometimes the greatest obstacle to true love is within yourself.

I wanted to give this five stars because it really was an intense book that wrenched my emotions, but it needs a little cleaning up (grammar, punctuation, missing words or letters of words, etc.), which pulled it down a bit for me.

Overall, this was probably one of the better reads I have checked out so far this year. It's gripping, poignant, and...well, beautiful. I loved the journey I took with Maggie and Clay. I was invested in their turmoil and really rooted for their success when it seemed that they had everything pushing against them. The author didn't try to sell a happily ever after, which I really appreciate, even though it broke my damn heart. But, she gave me hope, which is all I can ask.

This was a very honest portrayal of what it is like to go through the ups and downs of mental illness. Many times, I put myself in Maggie's shoes and I just can't say that I would have been able to do much different than she did. Love is a tricky thing and Miss Walters shows us all that sometimes, it just isn't enough.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed The Secret of Ella and Micha. If you remember the ending, should have an idea of the direction this story took and the feelings you were left with. In some ways, I think Find You in the Dark surpassed that, which, to me, is a good thing.

Six Sentence Sunday~ Find You in the Dark by A. Meredith Walters

Today's Six Sentence Sunday comes from a book that I recently finished and enjoyed so much, I just had to share it with you. Enjoy!

"That's it! I'm swearing off every member of the female population. Do they still have monasteries? Cause a life time of praying and bad haircuts sure as hell beats chicks and their freaking drama." Daniel's lunch tray came down with a loud clang on the table.

Rachel and I rolled our eyes in union and turned to the third member of our trio with what we hoped were supportive expressions.

"What did Kylie do this time?" Rachel asked, popping a Cheeto into her mouth.

I hope you all enjoyed it! Check it out on Goodreads and be sure to return tomorrow for my review!

NEW! Saturday Sneak Peek

So, some of you may be wondering where I have been lately. The holidays killed it for me and since then I have been taking each day a little slower, which means I have been spending more time with my husband and my kids and less time on the computer. Some other things I have been doing: writing, reading, and homework. Yes, at nearly 30 years old, I have homework lol

If you have been keeping up on the blog and my latest projects, you should already be familiar with Stranded. I am proud to say that it is doing wonderfully. I can't wait to finish That First Kiss, the second book in the Night Calls series and share it will y'all!

In the meantime, I want to share a new project with you that I am really exited about. Like anything that I write, this one has a bit of me in it. Unlike my other projects, this one has much more of me in it than anything else I have ever written. It's far from being an autobiography, but I'll leave it up to you to figure out what parts reflect my life and what parts are purely fiction. Here is the first chapter. Feel free to weigh in, share your thoughts and suggestions, and most importantly, enjoy!

Heart’s Desire

Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.

That moment when you realize that you care about others more than they will ever care about you is the moment you realize that you walk alone in this world. It has taken my whole life to learn this lesson, and I have learned it well. Caring is in my blood. It is who I am. I don’t know that I can ever change, and I don’t know that I want to. Opening myself up to others leaves my heart vulnerable to their abuse, and although I am weary of being kicked, I have no desire to kick back. For those of you who think I need to grow up, stand up for myself, know this. This thing that I have, it’s a soul deep affliction, an illness nearly impossible to overcome. The world needs people like me. It needs someone willing to love even if they are not loved back. This is my story.

Chapter 1

“He cheated,” I say, looking down at my shoes, my face awash in embarrassment. As if I am the one who has sinned.
“You’re kidding,” Charity gasps. “How did you find out?” Everything in her voice tells me that she is invested in my heartache, just as surprised as I am, and maybe even a little angry on my behalf. But her eyes, they tell a different story. While I pour my heart out to her, her interest is on something in the distance.
“He told me last night.” As I speak, I follow the direction of her gaze to a group of boys standing alongside a row of bright orange lockers. They’re seniors, two full grades ahead of us, but Charity watches them with an interest that suggests she doesn’t care. In fact, I know she doesn’t because Charity is a firm believer that age is just a number.
“What an ass.” She shakes her head. “Did he give you a reason? Did you guys break up?”
Again shame grabs hold of me, hanging on my shoulders and pressing them down until I feel like the added weight might finally break me. It’s unreasonable to feel this way, I know, but I can’t help feeling that what I am about to tell her will make her think I am a fool. Hell, I think I’m a fool. “He liked the attention.” I tell her exactly what he told me. “He doesn’t feel like I have been giving him enough of that lately. He was lonely.”
As the words pour out, a tremor takes root in my stomach. I feel sick just thinking about it. We haven’t had much time alone together lately because of my new job. Between school and work, our relationship has been pushed to the back burner.
Charity huffs a laugh. “Ethan only said that because he still wants to have his cake and eat it too. You know that, right?”
I do know that, intellectually. But my heart aches just thinking about walking away from everything that we’ve built over the last year—and eternity in high school terms. “Yeah,” I say, because how am I supposed to respond? I feel like an idiot.
Charity stops in the middle of the hall and turns to face me. “You didn’t break up with him, did you?” Her tone is filled with disappointment, as if she already knows what my answer will be. Maybe she does. We’ve been tentative friends since the third grade, best friends since the summer before sixth. I can still remember the night we met. Laney, a mutual friend of ours, introduced us one evening. During an enthusiastic bike race in which we were pitted against one another, Charity and I bonded over talks of our moody friend and, realizing that we made a good pair, rode off into the sunset together. Well, toward her house at any rate.
“No,” I tell her, trying desperately to hold my head up, but I can’t look at her. I can’t take my eyes off the three boys we’re closing in on. I wonder if any of them have a girlfriend and if they are cheaters too. In the back of my mind, I realize that at the age of fourteen I am already becoming jaded, but I don’t know how to stop it. Life happens. It changes you, and not always for the better.
“He’s going to do it again,” Charity warns.
I know the chances of that are high. Once a cheater, always a cheater, they say. Whoever “they” are. But all I can picture is Ethan’s face, twisted in agony, as he knelt before me in the middle of my bedroom floor. “I’m so sorry, Tess. I never meant to hurt you.”
Tears are streaking down his face. My chest is so constricted I can’t breathe. My heart hurts. I think it might have actually fractured in two, but I know that’s not possible because I’m not dead. It want to die, though, it hurts that bad.
Looking down at him, with his arms wrapped around my waist, his face buried in my abdomen, I resist the urge to hug him to me, to weave my fingers through his soft black hair and never let him go. Yesterday he was mine, today he feels like a stranger. But I still want him. How is that possible?
When he tips his head back and peers up at me through those big brown eyes, anger tears through me. I want to punch him. To make him hurt as much as he has hurt me.
“Please,” he whispers, his voice sounding choked. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”
I know right then that I won’t break up with him. Not because I think he will die without me—he’s already proven that he would find someone else to take my place—but because I don’t know what I would do without him.
I don’t say anything. I can’t speak for the lump in my throat, but Ethan must have seen the answer in my eyes because he lets out a shuddering breath and stands. His strong hands envelope my face and he pulls me to him, kissing my nose, my mouth, my forehead and uttering a million breathless ‘I love you’s’ as he hugs me to his chest. I feel his relief, but all I feel is a pervading sadness seeping into my soul like poisonous tar. And the anger hasn’t gone away. The longer I stand there, feeling his thudding heart slowly return to a natural pace beneath my cheek, the more my muscles tense. When he leans back to smile down at me, I tell him I want to punch him.
“I don’t blame you,” he responds. “I deserve to be punched for what I’ve done to you.”
And so I punch him.
I expected to feel better, like hitting him would liberate me from this turmoil slowly eating me away inside, but I don’t. I feel worse. You should never hurt someone you love.
Charity continues to chastise me as we make our way past the seniors who barely glance our way. I nod and ‘Mm hmm’ in all the appropriate places, but I’m not really listening anymore. There is only so much guilt a person can take before they begin to shut down.
The lunch hour is over and I have just enough time to make it to my locker and my next class before the late bell. Located on the first floor, my locker is the perfect distance between both of our midafternoon classes, just like Charity’s locker on the third floor is perfect for our morning classes. To make things easier, we decided to share the too small space.
“You’ll be okay,” Charity assures me as she opens the locker and reaches in for her change of clothes. Her next class is gym.
“Yeah, I know.” I try on a smile, but it feels as forced as it is. She frowns. “No worries. Hey.” Reaching in for my math book, I opt for a subject change. “Do you want to stay over tonight?”
“No, I can’t. Shay and some of the other cheerleaders invited me to this party at Greg’s.”
I nod my head and try to look cheerful and accepting even though inside I feel my tentative hold on my emotions slipping. Ever since high school started and Charity decided to join the squad I’ve felt the line between us growing thinner. We talk every day, but it’s not the same as it used to be. She’s pulling away, our lives are going in different directions, and I hate it.
“Oh, hey,” she places her hand on my arm. “You can come if you want?”
Charity doesn’t realize she has a tell, but I recognize the too bright smile and arched eyebrow for what it is. She thinks she’s hurt my feelings and so she is offering to include me in her plans even though it’s the last thing she wants to do.
“That’s okay,” I tell her. I start backwards down the hall, needing to put distance between us before I do something stupid, like cry. “I’m not really in the mood for a party tonight.” I purse my lips and give her a meaningful look. I don’t miss the relief behind her eyes when she nods sympathetically.
“Okay.” She starts to walk away, but spins around like she’s forgotten something. “Oh, I almost forgot. Can you give me a ride home after school?”
And there it is; our unbreakable bond. Charity knows she can always count on me, even though I'm sure I can’t say the same about her. “Sure. I’ll wait for you in the parking lot.”

How to Create a Swoon-Worthy Warrior

I found this cute idea by an author that I love and admire, and I thought, hey, why not make it my own...with a twist?

Have you ever wondered, what goes into making a warrior so incredibly dreamy, so swoon-worthy you wish you could crawl into that book and claim them for yourself? Today I would like to share my personal recipe for a swoon-worthy warrior passed down for generations with some slight changes.

The 2nd book in the Brotherhood series is coming soon!

About the book...

Forbidden desires...Being a Brother and a caretaker isn't an easy job, especially when you find yourself coveting the one person you were meant to protect but never have- your brother's woman. That is exactly where Behr finds himself- in love and out of luck. Nothing a little killing can't remedy. While looking for a little trouble to take his mind off what's brewing at home, Behr finds the perfect distraction: hunting down the mythical Rage demon prowling his city's streets.

Lost and alone...

Cheyenne doesn't know what to do with herself. Weeks have passed with no sign of Erias, and as far as she knows, he's dead. Just when she resigns herself to the difficult task of moving on with her life, he reappears, but the Erias she knew no longer exists. He's a demon, the very thing he and his brother's hunt each night. Can Erias overcome this transformation and find the strength to make it back to Cheyenne and the Brotherhood, and if he does, will they accept him? In a world plagued with uncertainty, only one thing is definite: no matter how it ends, someone's heart is bound to get ripped to shreds.

Review of Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

***

Echo's lack of memory is a pretty good indicator of exactly how traumatic her attack was. The author never made any secret of who did it and from the bits of history we are provided with, you can pretty much form an accurate picture of why it happened. I was appalled at the high school dramatics surrounding Echo, the fact that the people who were supposed to care so much about her--her friends and her boyfriend--were all talk, with the exception of one. Basically, when the going got tough, they hit the road and left her to deal with her issues alone. Her ex boyfriend played some game where he wanted her back, but he didn't. When Echo played the game right, it was worth his while to be with her again, but when he saw her scars, he couldn't handle it.

Noah Hutchins has his own drama to deal with since his parents died in a terrible fire and left him and his brothers to fend for themselves in foster care. Separated by the state, Noah has experienced nothing but abuse and poverty, and so he can't wait to turn eighteen so he can rescue his brothers, but he has a long way to go himself. Seeing the same school counselor as Echo, he finds himself dropped into her lap as she is hired to tutor him. Their connection pretty much fails right off the bat, but when Noah realizes their friendship can benefit them both if they work together, they form a loose connection.

I was pleased to see how these two came together. It was slow and methodical, neither one wanting to become too involved with the other and yet it crept up on them anyway. Both holding onto their secrets, Noah doesn't really think past the moment when it comes to Echo, he just focused on his brothers and one day becoming a family again, while Echo is struggling to keep herself from falling apart mentally as she is subjected to counseling sessions that threaten to break her last shred of sanity. If anyone was pushing the limits here, it was definitely Echo. Noah was the glue that held her together. The story was perfect for a teen romance. It was the definition of how far people will go to protect those they love, and how blind a person can be when that love it reflected back at them.

I really enjoyed this story, and the high praise reviews pretty much say it all.

Pushing the Limits is rated 4.6/5 and is available on Amazon.

Review of Beauty and the Feast by Julia Barrett

Eva Raines grew up as a simple farmer's daughter with a passion for food. After moving to Napa, she uses her culinary skills to help busy families and people in need as a rising talent in the ATAP business. When the very wealthy Gabriel Abbott hires Eva to cater a romantic dinner for two, the outcome for the evening is vastly different than either of them could have imagined.

Food is the central focus here, and the sensuality of it when applied to the right situation. Eva's passion for her job shines, but so does her warm and endearing personality. Everyone likes her. Gabriel, who is basically in danger of becoming what his sister termed a "Lothario" certainly isn't immune to her charms either. In fact, he is pulled right in from a simple phone call.

This book was listed as a comedic romance, but to me it was romance through and through. There was a touch of humor, yes, but no more than any other book I have read. The connection between the characters (all of them) was strong and well-developed, easily believable. It had just the right amount of passion, romance, drama, and touching moments to make a well-rounded story come alive. I loved the food moments almost as much as I love the steamy moments. I just can't find anything to complain about. This was a very satisfying read, and when you couple that with the recipes for all those delicious meals and deserts that made your mouth water throughout the book, well, that just elevates it to superstar status, IMO!

Beauty and the Feast enjoys a 4.3/5 start rating and is available on Amazon.

Teaser Tuesday!

We're back this week with Teaser Tuesday!

Brace yourselves, this week's teaser comes from John Matthews Blind School.

Ryan Lorimar and Jessica Werner have a special gift: they can see ‘fallen angel’ apparitions within other people. But as the fallen angels in turn know that they’ve been ‘viewed’, it’s a gift that will get him killed. They need protection. They need to enter ‘Blind School’.

Their only hope is Ellis Kendell and his team of agents. Day in, day out, Kendell’s team trawl through street-cam images from across the nation to pick up that tell-tale eye light-refraction of ‘viewers’. Can Kendell’s team get to the viewers before the fallen angels and get them to safety in ‘Blind School’? But there’s also an added agenda: Kendell’s department want the ‘viewers’ help in tracking down more ‘fallen angels’.

Yet is Kendell deluding himself? Setting this small group of teens against a legion fifty-times their number of the most cunning and vicious murderers and criminal masterminds the nation has to offer – is he simply throwing them to the wolves? Fated to watch them one-by-one die. The odds are against them.

 Teaser 1

"It's okay. I know your secret. You don't have to keep it to yourself any more."
"What?" A sharp jolt ran through her as she pulled back and stared at Ben.
But her mom was approaching, she couldn't pursue it. Her eyes shifted uncomfortably between Ben and her mom, then a quick forced smile to hopefully cover, she headed out.
"Bye y'all."

Teaser 2

Her thoughts pounded in time with her step: surely he couldn't have found out. And if he had, how?  She'd been so careful to keep everything from him.
She knew that she should wait until after the doctor's appointment to talk to Ben, could do without the agitation beforehand-but in the end it was burning too hot through her mind. At the next cross- street, she memory-dialed her home number.
After three rings her mother answered: "Hello."
"Mom. Is Ben still there?"

Blind School has a 4.5/5 star rating and is available for purchase on Amazon.
