An author's rant

Reblogged from :
Click to visit the original post That’s it I quit. As authors we say this quite often.  Not because of the writing aspect, not even because of the editing issues, heck we even can get through the rejection letters like pros. Some find them a cheap alternative to wallpaper. While others find it a mark of a real author to be rejected. Whatever your poison it’s not the writing that makes us want to quit.

I think every author out there can relate to this!! My favorite line:  "Readers please do me a favor, if you read a book and enjoy it, tell at least two people, because your opinion is the best marketing in the world."

News and Updates on the Writing Front

Hey all! I know I haven't updated in awhile, but I'm back! Aside from writing, which is going well, lately I have been doing all kinds of neat stuff. Last night, for example, my family and I went to an art show where my son had some of his artwork displayed :) On top of that, I have been updating and creating all kinds of neat stuff to support my writing.

First, I would like to share with you my brand new website geared toward my alter ego J.C. Valentine. Take a look and tell me what you think! I would love to hear from you.

Second,  I set aside a little time to get several of my books available to you in print. Check out the "Books" section at the top of the page. There you will find links to Lulu if you are looking for that option (A Warrior's Betrayal is included!). They should also be available on Amazon in print soon!

Finally, I have some bookplates and bookmarks available for those of you would like one (pictured above). Pick one or both and I will autograph them however you want.

Just email me at branflake3083@gmail.com with your mailing information. You can find a direct link in the "About" section at the top of the page. Be sure to put bookplates, bookmarks, or autograph (or something along those lines) in the subject!

If you want them personalized, say so. I will be happy to do that, otherwise I will just autograph them.

Note: If you are a blogger and would like more than one, let me know that too.

Thanks guys!

*FYI: the photo of the bookmark is of the front and the back. There is only ONE bookmark.

Full Steam Ahead

I'll start off by saying caffeine has been a godsend this week, and I'm sorry for the lack of posts. Unfortunately, life sometimes gets hectic and I have to take a step back and breathe a bit before pushing ahead. In case you're wondering what the heck has been happening to slow me down, I'll share with you the brief outline.

  • One sick child, which slowly morphs into three sick children...all home from school...for 5 straight days.
  • Massive undertaking to disinfect the household.
  • One whole day devoted to visiting with a couple of my favorite people :)
  • Writing. Lots and lots of writing.
  • Writing a paper on polynomials and the functions thereof.
  • Tutoring.
  • Hunting down information on Ella Fitzgerald for my 9 year old's book report that's due Tuesday when the library is fresh out of anything and everything Ella Fitzgerald. (If only she had chosen Beyonce Knowles!)
  • Maintaining my wavering exercise routine.
  • Reading.
  • Carving out some quality time with the hubby.
I'm sure there's something I missed in there, but that's basically it in a nutshell. I have to say, I am grateful that I have accomplished any writing at all this week, but I suppose the fact that I roll out of bed at 5 a.m. does help that along a bit :) What can I say, momma had her cape on this week!

Thanks for sticking with me, guys!

"Why Indies Rock' Blog Tour

Welcome everyone to my stop on the Why Indies Rock Blog Tour!

I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into when I signed up to be a part of this whole deal, but as I read the posts of others on this tour with me, I have had a chance to see and experience exactly what it is all about.

To be honest, I never set out to be an author. As a kid, I always wrote things, but I never put much stock into it. What I dreamed of being was a veterinarian. I cared for hordes of animals of all species and I still have that tendency to this day. I eventually traded that dream in for indie car racing, which turned briefly into a desire to be an Air Force fighter pilot, then settled into wife and mother. Today, I dream of becoming an editor. Notice that writer still isn't on that list of dreams.

I kind of fell into this job. One day a close friend of mine decided to get back to writing, so I thought it might be fun to see what I had in me too. I created a trilogy that has since been locked in a vault where not a soul except my own will ever find it.

The thing is, writing is so unbelievably hard sometimes. Ideas come and go so fast that I can't even write them all down, but executing them is sometimes a torturous affair. I agonize over every single word, revise until my brain aches, and take frequent breaks to recharge my batteries. Yes, I am a perfectionist.

During my journey, I have met some amazing people, but I have also met a few scrooges who try to diminish my work because I don't have the backing of a House. I have had countless people ask me if I would ever want to be published.  A novel idea to be sure. I mean, who wouldn't want to have the recognition a House brings? Who wouldn't want to be told your work is so good, someone wants to represent you? In fact, when I first started out, I took that path. I contacted all the houses and agents I could, sent out countless letters and even got some hopeful feedback, but it wasn't enough. It would never be enough. It took some soul searching, and one day I came to the conclusion that the answer to that question is a big fat no. I don't want to be anything other than an indie author. Why? Because I love setting my own pace. I am a rule breaker. I don't like walls around me, I don't like guidelines, and I don't like time frames. I work at my own pace, I develop my own ideas and I write what I want to write. I don't ever want to be the person who has to watch the market trend and try to capitalize on it. I want to march to my own drummer. Doing it my way ensures that I never get bored. I create my best work when I listen to to what I want. I can be closer to my audience, hands on, if you will. It is hard work. Such hard work! But for all the times when it isn't, it is rewarding.

Today I write and I know I will never stop. I can't. I love creating and I love what I have created. It is a challenge, and I have always enjoyed a good challenge. Each time I create another person, another world, I see myself getting better and I love that. I also know how important it is to have praise and feedback and a constant stream of support. That is why I give back. Not only do I share my work with others, I work to share other indie's work with the world. Because who are indies but another Anne Rice or Donna Grant or some other popular author looking for recognition? It's not the path but the journey that matters.

To Pen Or Not To Pen...

As a writer, I like to branch out from time to time and try my hand at different genres ranging from young adult (YA) to romance or mystery/thriller. I have very eclectic taste, which can be seen in my choices of reading, as well, though I tend to lean more toward romance (who doesn't like a strapping 800 yr. old man with bulging biceps who totes around a sword and is ready to lay down his life for yours at the drop of a hat?!). But what happens when you want to try something more risque?

Recently I picked up a book and found myself wide-eyed and twitchy over what I was reading. Turns out I had completely and innocently picked up an erotic romance (Totally by accident, I swear!). The thing of it was, it had some great material to learn from, scandalous though they may have been. I began to wonder if I could turn up the heat in my own stories. But there was a problem: my readers.

As I am sure many writers can relate, family likes to support you in everything you do, so it is no wonder some of us cringe if they pick up a story that has, let's say, less than wholesome aspects. I am one of these people. I don't think a story has to have graphic sex to be a worthwhile read. Rather, I think a book is a book and how it was written is the way it should be. I don't judge a book because of its content, but rather how it was executed. I want connection, I want romance, I want intrigue! And if that means lots and lots of sex to accomplish that, then I am willing to accept that.

So back to the point...
Would you consider a writing a racy novel if it meant you could change your name from that boring name your parents stuck you with and you always hated, like Jane Doe, to the name you fantasized about your whole life, like Fantasia Carmichael? I never really considered it before, but one day I was creeping around one of my favorite author's Goodreads profile and, low and behold, she had a pen name under which she wrote erotica. Color me surprised! Okay, not really. Her novels push the envelope, so it wasn't a far stretch of the imagination. So I got to thinking, how do you choose a pen name? How do you use a pen name? Can you use a pen name without legal ramifications? Is it easy? How do you choose one? There were so many more, but you get the idea and I won't torture you by listing them all.

I started with a Google search and came up with some pretty great (and surprising) results. Did you know there are name scramblers out there? Oh yes, and there are even some that will give you random names from countries all over the world! Very cool.

Something I was shocked to find: Did you know that Anne Rice, author of books such as The Vampire Lestat, writes erotica? This woman right here! --->

My mind wanders to dark places of my own grandmother sitting at a desk with her quill, ink well, and piece of parchment paper (she's old, she doesn't know how to work a computer) her mind corrupted with thoughts of sex and debauchery and I shudder, grateful that she taught my mother, the virgin queen, better.

My search brought me to Amazon, where people say that it is very easy to publish under a pen name with just a few little details to be considered to make it work. This solidified it for me. I have since chosen a pen name and begun a series that will be released sometime this summer under said name. I am excited, but a couple of close friends have raised the question that begs to be answered: What happens if that pen name earns more success than your given name? Does it somehow sour the success you have achieved with your given name (assuming you haven't tied the two together)? Or should you rejoice in the success and go about your day? That is a question I am still trying to answer.

So what would you do: Tie the pen name to your given name and enjoy dual success, or keep it separate so no one knows the sordid details of your alter ego? Or would you resist the use of a pen name and write everything under your given name, because it doesn't bother you at all that you write children's books and have since segued into erotica, knowing it is just a matter of time before little Billy or Sarah pick up your version of The Dirty Dozen and are scarred for life?

Getting Through the Tough Times...

“Imagination is the golden-eyed monster that never sleeps. It must be fed; it cannot be ignored.” –Patricia A. McKillip

I think everyone who has ever written a line, be it poetry or story of some kind, knows the truth of this statement. I cannot count how many times I have hit a block in the road where frustration gets the better of me and I say to myself, “Maybe I’ll just quit.” Writing, that is. Because it is hard, and all too often those who devour books don’t appreciate the sheer amount of blood, sweat and tears we authors, published or indie, go through to put our creative minds to work and produce something amid the chaos of life that continues to speed by at an increasingly alarming rate.

It takes vast amounts of courage to put yourself out there, to subject yourself and your brain child/children to criticism and the harsh words that inevitably come to all of us, because everything is relative. What one loves, another hates. I have been the subject of much criticism, and yeah, some of it hurts, but I try to treat all of it as a learning opportunity. Look at it as a lesson in character development. This is an opportunity to find out what you’re made of. Can you take the heat? Do you have what it takes to bounce back and come in harder and stronger next time? Do you have the willpower to withstand the next blow, or will you crumble under the pressure.

Every time I feel that nagging self-doubt niggling at the base of my brain, I stomp it down brutally, because I know better than anyone that I am not going to quit. I love writing. It is hard work. Sometimes I get tired and I want to quit, but then I get hit with another idea or one of my characters pleads with me that it will be better next time, just give it another chance, and so I do, because I love them. I love my brain children. I love that they take me places I have never been, scary, dark places, fun and humorous places, and most of all, loving and warm places that transport me into their world. Just as they cannot live without me, I cannot live without them. They give my thoughts and emotions a voice they might not have otherwise. Through them I feel more complete. That is what self-expression is all about—being able to share a piece of your innermost self with the world. Damn the criticism. The world is more colorful for both the world we live in and the world we create.

Forge ahead my fellow creators, and don’t let anyone stop you!
